From behind the scenes to leading lady

Blagging a job as a seamstress, although she couldn't sew, on the set of 'The Tudors' was Katie McGrath's unusual route into acting. A love scene with Jonathan Rhys Myers later, she tells Chris Jackson, and she was performing in front of millions. Now she's teaming up with Myers again in 'Dracula'

'Miss McGrath isn't here at the moment I'm afraid," says the man behind the desk at the Covent Garden Hotel, mispronouncing it "grath" as in "wrath", as so many Englishmen tend to do. He directs me toward the avocado-coloured bar where I wait upon a comfy floral print chair as rich olive-skinned guests sip on cocktails and beer at a marble-topped bar, backed by a large fanlight mirror, which seduces shameless stares of vanity from a few.

The wait is short as Katie strides in, searching the tables for me, smiling at strangers, until she finds me. She greets me with a hug and before I have a chance to say anything she's ordered tea, soda and a small bowl of macadamia nuts, which she then devours in not too short order. She's not one to stand on ceremony.

Katie's in London promoting the latest television adaptation of one of fiction's most popular characters, Dracula. From the producers of Downton Abbey, Dracula is a major British and American co-production, primed to capture audiences across the world.

She leans back against the wall pulling her left knee into her body, as if at home on her couch, rather than in the bar of a five-star London hotel. She speaks in a low voice with the soft and steady cadence of a person of some cultivation, save for the odd swear, which only serves for emphasis. I ask her about her Dracula.

"With this Dracula they've taken the story and they've flipped it. They've made it more modern. There's a modern comic-book element to the story.

"The Dracula of this story is playing a role, that of an American industrialist, to exact revenge on those who wronged him."

It is, like others, a departure from Bram Stoker's original, although, as Katie points out, the Dubliner may have warmed to an adaptation where Dracula and two other main characters are played by Irish actors – Jonathan Rhys Meyers and Victoria Smurfit are the other two. (Katie, like Stoker, is an alumni of Trinity). She plays Lucy Westenra.

The Lucy Westenra of Bram Stoker's original was the embodiment of youthful innocence, the counterpoint to Dracula. I ask her what we can expect from her Lucy.

"My Lucy is a complete departure. In Stoker's Dracula she is a paragon of virtue. She is the idealised Victorian woman. She's sweet, kind, soft and gentle. She's the archetype of goodness," she says, stopping shortly before each sentence with a pregnant pause. She is polished in her speech.

"My Lucy, however, well, she's more of a high society 'It' girl. She seems vapid and vacuous at first. Then you see she has problems of her own, problems which will completely change your outlook on her. She's not the sweet girl of Bram Stoker's novel."

Katie is keen to point out that the departure doesn't stop there and that her Lucy is, like herself, an independent woman.

"She doesn't take sh*t from no one. She's the one in control, blonde strumpet that she is," she says.

Stoker's Lucy is a woman pursued by multiple suitors, but Katie is reticent on the subject of her own suiters.

She betrays the discomfort of someone who is not used to attention, someone who is still coming to terms with their success. It's understandable, she never saw such a future for herself when she was younger.

Katie McGrath was not a typical teenager. She had pink hair, listened to Green Day, and worked in a Tattoo Parlour. She was someone who you could imagine in a Kevin Smith or Richard Linklater film – a Goth, an Emo, a Rocker, an outlier. She no longer sees herself in such terms.

"I don't see myself as alternative anymore. You get to a point in life where you're comfortable with who you are and exist in your own world. I'm just me, walking around and trying to do a job without failing, although I do miss the pink hair."

Her path to stardom was unforeseen and unusual. An average student at Trinity (she studied history), she, like so many, did not know what she wanted to do with her life post-graduation. She played with the idea of a career in fashion and worked for Image magazine to achieve her left-field dream of being Vogue magazine's China editor. She then swung a job as a seamstress, though she couldn't sew, on the set of The Tudors, which was filmed near her home in Wicklow.

As she says "they needed a busty wench" for a love scene with Jonathan Rhys Meyers and she was happy to oblige them. Within a year she was cast as Morgana in BBC's Merlin, acting before millions of viewers in more than 150 countries.

The young woman whose life was without clear direction before was now on a path to great fame and fortune. It's little wonder she refers to herself as "having won the lottery".

As Morgana, Katie became a favourite of fantasy fanboys (the polite term for nerds), who can be quite obsessive. Often some of them live their lives vicariously through shows and their characters. She's experienced it first-hand, receiving, among other things, penned stories, pictures and dolls of herself as Morgana. She came face-to- face with many of them at San Diego's annual Comic-Con, a Mecca for fans of fantasy, sci-fi, and comic books, one of whom was Katie herself.

"It was amazing, it was like a place of joy, it was like a giant air-filled hangar of joy" she says with a broad smile, in between eating more macadamias. "They're all pretending to be someone, be it Princess Leah or Green Arrow, but at the same time that is who they are.

"It's both bizarre and wonderful to see all these people pretend to be others and be so comfortable doing it."

Not all the parts she's played have been as successful. Take Madonna's directorial debut, W.E., in which Katie was cast. W.E. was panned by critics and was barely seen by anyone, taking less than $900,000 at the box office (The King's Speech, a similarly themed film, took more than $400m the year before).

"I think W.E. was a good film. I think critics were always going to be tough on it because it was Madonna's film. If it had been any other first time director I think they'd have been far more supportive of it" she says sincerely.

In spite of the failure of W.E. Katie's career has kicked-on, and last year she was cast in Channel 4's Labyrinth, an adaptation of Kate Mosse's best-selling novel of the same name, in which she was again required to wear a corset, a requirement made of her again in her latest ole, which, in one way, sees her career come full circle.

"I started as crew with Johnny, when I first met him I worked in wardrobe, now I'm starring opposite him. Sometimes I stop and think 'sh*t, I won the lottery'."

Her friendship with him means much to her, both personally and professionally, particularly given his extra experience.

"It was great having him there. This show is a big deal, with big money and big networks behind it. When you walk into a room with 20 high-powered producers it's great to know you're walking in with a friend, one who's got your back."

It's understandable that she seeks such support. Her acting apprenticeship was served in front of an audience of millions and it wasn't until she started to shoot Dracula that she felt confident in what she was doing.

And yet, in spite of the depths with which she has been cast, she has emerged. Katie is not one for the future anymore, she is one for the present, although there is some downside.

"People have great difficulty pronouncing my name. I've given up correcting people" she says. I say nothing of the man behind the desk.

Dracula begins at 9 pm next Thursday on Sky Living HD

In an attempt to prove herself to the film’s director, Daniel Taylor (Gil Bellows), who also happens to be her lover, she embarks on a journey to South Africa to prepare for the film’s upcoming auditions.
Her journey is not as simple as she imagined, resulting into a comedy of errors leading her to diamond-in-the-rough Free State farmer, Kobus Willemse (Bok van Blerk). Zooming in on the fact that Kobus bears the same surname as her heroin character, she begs him to take her under his wing and teach her about what it means to be a Boer.
Kobus is focused on saving the family farm from bankruptcy and has no time to waste by entertaining a British lady’s fantasy of being an actress. Jodi however manages to convince him of her proposition by passing it off as a business transaction with great potential. Jodi and Kobus cultures clash, they have opposing ideologies, their upbringing was drastically different and their timing is not ideal. Yet the dynamics of their relationship changes as they get to know each other.
To complicate Kobus and Jodi’s newfound affection for each other, Daniel Taylor, arrives on the scene with a proposition that forces Jodi to make a very difficult decision…
Can love override reason in this classic romantic comedy?

After frightening Merlin viewers for years as raven-haired sorceress Morgana, Katie McGrath has gone blonde for her latest role in Sky Living's Dracula.

And weirdly, Katie reckons changing hair colour actually changed her into a different person altogether...

"It was so odd being blonde," says Katie. "I'd go into work as Katie, but no sooner had I put on the blonde wig, people treated me differently and I acted differently. Somehow It gave me an entirely different walk. I had a rushed sort of totter as a blonde. It was bizarre!"

Katie plays Victorian era socialite Lucy Westenra, who's the best friend of Mina Murray (Arrow's Jessica De Gouw) - the woman Dracula becomes obsessed with over the 10-part series.

"Lucy is a very social girl," explains Katie. "She's high class and intelligent and used to being the focus of every room."

Seeing lead actor Jonathan Rhys Meyers as Dracula didn't cause any fang-jealousy amongst the cast apparently.

"They are not comfortable to wear I can tell you!" laughs Katie, who also starred alongside Jonathan in BBC2 series The Tudors. "And Jonny sounded like Daffy Duck with them on!

"Seriously, although the show is called Dracula, it's not really about vampires as such, it's about the relationships between all the characters, and the fact that one of them is a semi-supernatural being is actually just a small part of it. The story is about revenge, love and conflict. What's great about this show is you can root for all the characters, even though all have darker elements."

Dracula premieres on Sky Living, on October 31 at 9pm.

Katie, it’s a pleasure to meet you.

Surroundings all very apt today, aren’t they?
I know, it’s a bit odd! It’s, um, yeah… sitting in catacombs.

Yes, exactly. Well, we’re talking all things Dracula today, of course. And quite a cult figure the whole thing is. How do you feel being part of it all?
I actually feel really honoured. I mean, there’s something very nice about it being Bram Stoker and him being Irish and there being so many Irish in the cast with Victoria Smurfit and Johnny, obviously, and myself, but to take on such an iconic book, an iconic role and in a production that’s got so many great people behind it… I feel very honoured, actually.

Well, tell us about your character, because you’re playing the social butterfly, aren’t you?
I am. I play Lucy Westenra, who is all things sass and all things sophisticated and frivolous and frothy and very blonde. Yes, me entirely! I don’t quite know why I got cast.

It’s not necessarily reflective of you in real life.
No, I’m exactly like that! No, she’s great. I mean, we were talking about this a lot today, where the characters all start at the beginning of the series is not where they end up. And if I had thought that Lucy was going to be the same character from episode one to episode ten I don’t think I’d be interested in playing her, because there’s only so long you can play the sort of queen-bee-of-high-school type, which is kind of that character that she is. But very quickly as the show goes on you start to see that there’s so much more to her and she, in a way, is trapped within this society – this high society girl whose only aspiration, really, is to make a good marriage. And she is so much more than that and fighting against that and has a dark secret that becomes apparent as the show goes on.

‘As the show goes on…’ you reel us in, do you?
I’m reeling you in, yeah.

And you’ve grown up in Ashford in Wicklow.
I have, yes.

How do the people – because that’s kind of a very small town, isn’t it and closely knit and everyone knows each other’s business – how do they all feel? I mean, they must be hugely excited about your career.
God, I hope so. I don’t know, they haven’t told me! It’s still the same, rocking up into the local Spar and, you know, buying my milk, so there’s nothing changed.

So where’s home these days?
London. No, no, actually, home is always Ireland. No matter where I go and how far away I go. The guys were asking us in the car – because I was in the car with the cast – asking Vic and Johnny and me, ‘Do you feel like you’ve come home every time you get into Dublin?’ and en masse we all went ‘Yeah’.

That’s nice, that’s nice. And we hope you’ll be home a lot more.
So do I!

And we can talk to you more often. What are the plans? Do you have plans, is it day by day… ?
D’you know, I fly back to South Africa this evening to finish a job.

Really?
I flew in from Johannesburg yesterday morning and I fly back out because I’m doing a film out there at the minute, so I’ve got two more weeks left so I’ve got to go finish that.

На них можно посмотреть здесь, в данный момент не оформлено коллажами всего четыре одежки, возможно скоро появится пятая. К сожалению, их довольно непросто их находить, потому в среднем получается один коллажик раз в полтора-два месяца.

In Sky Living’s bold new adaptation of Dracula, Katie McGrath plays a sultry Victorian. It’s a long way from the wardrobe department…

Katie McGrath auditioned for Dracula for a laugh. “There was no way they were ever going to cast me, because the casting call was for a 21-year-old blonde ingénue virgin.”

The flaxen-skinned, normally raven-haired actress, 29, best known for Merlin – in which she played evil sorceress Morgana – positively cackles. “So the whole time it was just a bit of fun, because it seemed like such an outlandish idea.” Katie may not be a leggy bombshell, but it’s easy to see just what entranced the producers, and made her a favourite with Merlin fans: the impudent glint in her eye.

In Dracula, Katie plays Lucy Westenra, the best friend of Mina Murray, the lady who charms Dracula (Jonathan Rhys Meyers, The Tudors). In Bram Stoker’s 1897 novel, Lucy is a wallflower, but not in this bold adaptation from the makers of Downton Abbey. “Lucy is very sweet in the book. She’s this very sweet illustration of the perfect Victorian woman. In this version, Lucy is much more ferocious. She has much more sass.”

Sass suits McGrath – she has it in spades. It’s how a history graduate from Wicklow in Ireland was able to go from working in the wardrobe department on The Tudors, to cosying up to its star Rhys Meyers on screen, to landing a plum role in Merlin, without any training as an actor.

Five years later, she’s been reunited with Rhys Meyers: he’s perfectly cast as the brooding, smouldering lead. This time, though, their characters are not lovers but rivals; in a twist that’s sure to raise eyebrows, Lucy also has a crush on Mina. For Katie, this meant a “chemistry read” with Australian actress Jessica de Gouw (Arrow), who plays Mina. “Thank God she’s good-looking” - there’s that glint again - “I’m going to get in trouble for saying that!”

It’s asy to see what appealed after five years at the helm of a family drama like Merlin: Dracula is an altogether darker, sexier beast, but it’s still true to its Victorian roots, Katie believes.

“When you think of women back then, they didn’t have very many skills at their disposal and weren’t given all the opportunities that men were. But one of the things they had over men was their sexuality, and Lucy very much uses that. The best way of describing her is if she walks into a room and people don’t know she’s there then she’s failed.

“I enjoy it because I’m so not like that in real life. I’m such a tomboy and my family thinks it’s hilarious. But it’s so far from who I am that it’s great fun to go in and do something completely different.”

One of the most spectacular weapons in the armoury of this thoroughly modern Victorian is her risqué wardrobe, which is, as Katie puts it, the glint giving away to unabashed delight, “Fabulous! Absolutely fabulous!

“One thing I love about Dracula is that I’m not allowed to wear the same costume twice for the show, so it means endless changes. On Merlin it was always the same thing, but in this I have more fittings than days working!”

It’s obvious that this tomboy is having a ball; throughout the interview she sports the broad smile of someone who can’t quite believe her luck – which is the case. “As an actor you think, ‘OK, I’m got the job – how long before they can fire me? How long do I have to film before they definitely can’t fire me? Don’t make any mistakes, keep my head down for the first month and they can’t fire me any more…’

“I used to say, ‘After Merlin I’m never going to work again. I’m going to give it all up and make cupcakes for a living. I’m going to be crazy cupcake lady.’”

It will be a while before Katie McGrath has to fall back on flour, sugar and eggs.

Lavish Costumes – Got It, Flaunt It
For Katie McGrath’s character, Lucy Westenra, [costume designer Annie] Symons channelled flaboyant designer Christian Lacroix. “I wanted Lucy to look very ornate and very encrusted in ostentatious wealth. She has more outfits than anybody because she’s got more money than anybody.”

Прямо не верится - не просто новое интервью, а еще и фотографии! На днях появилась информация, что те заколдованные фотосессии, которых мы ждем уже несколько месяцев, никак не появятся из-за того, что что-то там не согласовано с агентами Кейти. Будем надеяться, что это интервью - хороший знак, и что все уже уладилось.

Rifling through a thesaurus is no help. Perhaps enchanting? Yes, and if not then what other word possibly comes closer to describing Katie McGrath’s presence? Her jet-black hair, flawless complexion and those green eyes, all incredibly intense and capable of making even Snow White a jealous bitch. Yes, enchanting, that’s the word. And aptly so, given it’s majestic connotations and the royal background of Morgana, the role for which Katie is arguably best known. But that’s all over now, Merlin, that is. Now, Katie is on to pastures new and No Cigar has seized the opportunity to find out what’s next…

“I have finally started to feel like I know what I’m doing and possibly that what I’m doing isn’t shit,” gushes Katie as she comments on her career progression thus far. “It wasn’t until I got Merlin that I went: ‘shit, this is now my life and now I know how lucky I was, how far I’ve come and that I won the fucking lottery.” If you aren’t familiar with her story, Katie became an actress quite by accident after working as crew on the set of The Tudors. Originally intending to become a fashion journalist (“I wasn’t good at the 9-to-5 structure!”) it wasn’t until Katie was encouraged to try working on the other side of the camera that acting became a realistic possibility. “I think the way I got into acting was the right way for me, I had no concept of what it was or how difficult it was going to be.” So, no young-dreams of acting and becoming a star? Nope. In fact Katie was a rather unlikely acting candidate: “When I started Merlin I very much felt like: ‘shit I don’t know what I’m doing.’ Everybody else had been to drama school and I was sitting there going: ‘I don’t know what the f**k I am.’”

Having now closed the book once and for all on the magical-fantasy-drama that was Merlin, Katie is already set to return to our screens later this year in a tantalizing new production based on the myth of Dracula: “you’ve got the scale and the vastness of an American show but with the class and the intelligence of a British show; it looks fantastic, you rock up and there’s like 400 people in period costume!” Yes NBC, one of America’s network giants, is backing the BBC’s next big show: a vampy (no pun intended) period drama with an easy-on-the-eye cast, headed up by Jonathan Rhys Myers. “It’s got an amazing cast, it looks astonishing and the scripts are wonderful. Everybody’s familiar with the Dracula myth but I think they’re going to be shocked by this – especially in America.” So the sheer scale of this production doesn’t deter the once lacking-in-confidence Katie? “I’m much more confident now. I could never have done this before, I couldn’t have stood in a scene with Johnny [Jonathan Rhys Meyers] and felt equal with him. Doing this now, six years after I started, I feel capable.”

With the filming of the inaugural series wrapping as we speak and the show set to air later this year, we’re keen to know what acting venture is on Katie’s mind next: “I want to do a film that scares me, one that I read and think: ‘oh my god, I don’t know how the f*ck I’m going to do this!” How good would a McGrath Hollywood take over be? Heading off to Cali any time soon Katie? “I just want to be good at what I do so whether it’s a Michael Bay movie, or a Gus van Sant movie or a BBC drama, to me it doesn’t really matter because all I want to do is get better at what I’m doing.” A testament to her refreshing professionalism, albeit by way of perfectionist inclinations: “I have a fear of not being good at something.”

Despite this fear, Katie is still hungry for roles that throw her in the deep end and she maintains a love for ‘black sheep’ characters. What’s more, having outwardly expressed her proclivity toward portraying the bad girl, Katie readily pours over her ultimate rebellious chick role: “I like all the girls in the Fast and Furious movies, I’m like: ‘you look hot, you can drive and you’ve got sass! And I love a bit of Tomb Raider or Gone In Sixty Seconds… If Darth Vader was a girl I think I could do it!” Oh yes, she went there; she descended into Star Wars territory. But she hastily retracts her statement: “don’t put that, I’d get killed by the Star Wars community!” And yet, despite the admittedly fanatical edge some Star Wars fans possess, it’s practically impossible to imagine Katie being reprimanded for any such geeky utterance – Star Wars sacrilege or not. More likely, fans would weaken at the knees and nod in salivating agreement as her beguiling Irish charm innocently captivates. And the best part of it all is that Katie is completely and by her own admission one of them: “going to Comic-Con was the best fun ever! It’s the closest feeling to being a Rock Star! For me, who’s such a geek, I was like: ‘okay, there’s a giant statue of Optimus Prime: I’m happy.” So she’s beautiful, talented and one of the geeks (side note, she is nicknamed Short Circuit because of the speed with which her eyes move when she reads), an envious mix of perfection.

But her eclectic mix is apparently not a niche that translates well into adolescent surroundings: “I think I was kind of a non-entity in school, I was very quiet and shy and most people probably just passed me.” Having made quite the transition, it was largely Katie’s adamancy to be remembered that encouraged her to embrace acting: “by the time I left school I was definite that I wanted to make myself something different and I think that’s why I became an actress: so I wouldn’t get passed by again.” Talking so boldly and with such confidence, it’s difficult to picture Katie as a scuffling schoolgirl.

It’s even more unimaginable when you remember the conviction with which Katie played hard-as-nails Kate in Channel 4’s recent drama, Dates. “It was one of the hardest things I had done up until that point, which is why I wanted to do it. It was ones of those times where you read the sсript and I go: ‘I don’t know how to do this.’” Katie was selected to play a guarded, abrasive character who happened to be a lesbian: I was really lucky to play something like that opposite Gemma Chan, she walked in and I was like: ‘if I was ever going to be a lesbian, you would totally be the one!’”

So, between the rock star life of Comic-Con, her experience depicting a good-princess-gone-bad and slightly dabbling in lesbianism, what’s been Katie’s best year as an actress so far? Naturally with a resume like that, there can’t be just one: “There’s been two. The best year was the first year I worked in film, when I worked as crew on The Tudors. It’s where I met my best friend and we worked four days of the week and drank three days; it was wonderful.” Having worked for both sides of the camera, Katie’s perspective is quite unique and a point which she feels makes her a nicer actor to work with, as she is much more sympathetic to the crew. And the second best year goes to… “This year, doing Dracula. For the first time I feel like I’m capable of the job I’ve been given. I’m working on something that inspires and scares me at the same time with the most wonderful cast.”

So all’s well that ends well? “I get asked a lot: ‘if you could go back what would you tell your younger self?’ and 100% every time I’d say: ‘don’t worry it’s all going to be okay, no matter how hard it is, you’re going to have an amazing life in a few years.’” And while, granted, we won’t all grow up to be wonderful actresses, telling ourselves everything is going to be fine does seem like a nice bit of advice… at least for now, anyway!
